Shakira’s free-for-all concert this past Sunday has broken the record for the biggest audience at a public concert in Mexico City, with an estimated 210,000 fans crowding the streets to see their hero perform live.
The record was previously held by a local band, Café Tacuba, who drew 170,000 fans to a concert in 2005.
The gig was Shakira’s second performance in Mexico City in the past two weeks.
Shakira fan, Yolanda Riesgo, said: “We think other big artists should play at the Zocalo so that the people who live in Mexico City have access to these types of events because a concert is very expensive and the majority of the people can’t afford it.”
The star will stay in Mexico until Wednesday, before travelling to Turkey to wrap up her Oral Fixation Tour.
The tour has featured 119 concerts around the world with an estimated attendance of 2 million people.

Shakira put on the show of a lifetime on Sunday when 210,000 fans gathered in Mexico City’s central Zocalo square to watch the Colombian put on a free show.
The square holds about 100,000 people according to official figures, but fans crammed into adjoining streets to be part of the historic event.
The concert was one of the last in Shakira’s current world tour, Oral Fixation. The tour is set to end Wednesday in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey.
‘This has been a month of absolute joy. I have fed off you, and I leave with my heart full,’ Shakira told the crowd.

Shakira is reportedly making final plans to marry her long-time lover Antonio de la Rua at a wedding in the Dominican Republican next year.
Newspaper El Dia says the sexy singer will be in her mansion located in the resort Punta Cana, in Dominican east coast. That same program didn’t reveal the date of the wedding, but several indications point to the September of 2008.
De la Rua and Shakira have been fiancés for 7 years and although they’ve been living together, her fans have long awaited their wedding.

Colombian pop star Shakira rocked Mexico City and even President Felipe Calderon on the final stop of her “Oral Fixation” world tour.
Calderon attended the Sunday concert with his wife and his 10-year-old daughter.
The bespectacled leader, dressed in a blue sport coat and gray slacks, spoke briefly to the rock diva — known for her sexy, belly dancing moves — minutes before she sang to 50,000 fans. There were no reports of what the Calderon said to her.
“Thanks for giving me this opportunity to return to this country, which I feel like is my own,” Shakira was quoted as saying in Monday’s Reforma newspaper, which featured a picture of her and Calderon sitting together on its front page.

The popularity of Shakira has forced Mexican club Necaxa to play their upcoming Copa Libertadores match hundreds of miles away from the Azteca stadium.
Necaxa, who go into the third-round second leg tie against the Uruguayan side Nacional with a 3-2 deficit, will stage the match at Mexico City’s Azteca stadium, around 600 kilometres from their base in Aguascalientes.
Mexican media said that Shakira was due to give a concert at the La Vitoria stadium on Friday and it would take more than 24 hours to prepare the arena for her show.
Copa Libertadores is the South American equivalent of the European Champions League.

Call it the “Hips Don’t Lie” effect.
Last year, Epic Records held a contest offering fans a chance to help create a video for Colombian pop diva Shakira’s yodel-tastic single of the same name featuring Wyclef Jean. Label executives’ expectations were low — they were spending only $5,000 to create and promote a quickie clip, after all.
But the impact of that effort sent shock waves through the music industry.
The contest yielded some 500 submissions of fans lip-syncing and booty-shaking in extremis that were spliced together by a professional editor to create a single video. Posted at Yahoo.com’s music portal in March 2006, it quickly became the site’s most popular clip. When it did drop out of the No. 1 slot several weeks later, it was second only to Shakira’s own video for the same song. The pair of “Hips” were eventually streamed more than 50 million times, making “Hips Don’t Lie” easily the Nielsen BDS most-streamed video of the year, just about tripling the number generated by second-place finisher Beyoncé’s “Check on It.” Shakira’s song went on to become a No. 1 hit in 20 countries, selling 1.7 million copies. And as an unintended result, “Hips Don’t Lie (Fans-Only Version)” seems to have sparked a brave new era of fan-artist interconnectivity.

Colombian mega-star Shakira went on a shopping spree after performing in India, buying cotton saris, books on Indian spirituality and a good luck charm meant to ward off the evil eye, a newspaper reported Thursday.
Shakira performed to a packed house in Mumbai, the country’s entertainment and financial center, on Sunday. Before heading out a day later, her staff tore through the city’s shopping districts, the Times of India reported, and also had hotel staff download hundreds of Indian songs for her.
“Shakira was very curious about desi (Indian) books and music,” Illan Weill, the manager of the Grand Hyatt hotel where she stayed, was quoted as saying by the Times. “She ensured that we packed her books and music CDs, among other things.”

On March 23rd, 2007 Dubai came to a stand still - literally - as more than 25,000 fans made their way towards Dubai Autodrome for a sold out mega concert!
In a city with more construction cranes than anywhere else in the world, and a road system struggling to cope with everyday traffic, the biggest concert ever certainly challenged the infrastructure. But the many “Shakira Shakira” cries were drowned out by a gigantic roar from the capacity crowd when Shakira kicked off her concert with a rendition of a song made famous by Lebanese diva, Fairuz.
Several hits and many a belly and hip shake later, Shakira had achieved what no other western artist has ever done in this region.
