Shakira’s free-for-all concert this past Sunday has broken the record for the biggest audience at a public concert in Mexico City, with an estimated 210,000 fans crowding the streets to see their hero perform live.
The record was previously held by a local band, Café Tacuba, who drew 170,000 fans to a concert in 2005.
The gig was Shakira’s second performance in Mexico City in the past two weeks.
Shakira fan, Yolanda Riesgo, said: “We think other big artists should play at the Zocalo so that the people who live in Mexico City have access to these types of events because a concert is very expensive and the majority of the people can’t afford it.”
The star will stay in Mexico until Wednesday, before travelling to Turkey to wrap up her Oral Fixation Tour.
The tour has featured 119 concerts around the world with an estimated attendance of 2 million people.

Colombian pop star Shakira rocked Mexico City and even President Felipe Calderon on the final stop of her “Oral Fixation” world tour.
Calderon attended the Sunday concert with his wife and his 10-year-old daughter.
The bespectacled leader, dressed in a blue sport coat and gray slacks, spoke briefly to the rock diva — known for her sexy, belly dancing moves — minutes before she sang to 50,000 fans. There were no reports of what the Calderon said to her.
“Thanks for giving me this opportunity to return to this country, which I feel like is my own,” Shakira was quoted as saying in Monday’s Reforma newspaper, which featured a picture of her and Calderon sitting together on its front page.

The popularity of Shakira has forced Mexican club Necaxa to play their upcoming Copa Libertadores match hundreds of miles away from the Azteca stadium.
Necaxa, who go into the third-round second leg tie against the Uruguayan side Nacional with a 3-2 deficit, will stage the match at Mexico City’s Azteca stadium, around 600 kilometres from their base in Aguascalientes.
Mexican media said that Shakira was due to give a concert at the La Vitoria stadium on Friday and it would take more than 24 hours to prepare the arena for her show.
Copa Libertadores is the South American equivalent of the European Champions League.
